( Torii )
The torii is the gateway to Shinto shrines. It consists of two upright posts connected at the top by two horisontal crosspieces. Regarded as a barrier against evil spirits, beyond it is found the sacred area of the gods. Most torii are red, but some can be seen in other colors such as white or black.
It is said that the terraced rice fields are made about 400 years ago at foot of Mt. Kurakakeyama.
The whole area is 7.4ha and there are 852 terraced rice fields on 100 tiered levels.
