Boulder Beach and Otter Cliffs
Acadia National Park, Maine

The view of Otter Cliffs from Boulder Beach is one of the classic sights in Acadia, but it took me a few trips to Acadia before I finally went there and was able to photograph it at night. Prior to my last trip, all my trips to Acadia had ended up with lots of clouds and fog, but last week I was lucky to get a few clear nights.

In my astrophotography presentations, after I mention the blending of multiple exposures I use to achieve these photos, I sometimes get asked how much time goes into the editing of a photo. For this photo it was over 4 hours of processing on the computer. This photo is a blend of 14 exposures, although logically it is a blend of 5 images. What do I mean by that? I used 10 images of the sky at ISO 6400 for 10 seconds each to create a single image of the sky that has less noise and near pinpoint stars using the Starry Landscape Stacker (http://ift.tt/1iZwUI9) software for Mac. Then I used 4 other foreground exposures to blend with the sky image to create the entire image, having everything in focus from the foreground to the background. After that, lots of work in Lightroom and Photoshop to “mold” my final image.

You can read much more about my process in my tutorial “Introduction to Landscape Astrophotography” on the Luminous Landscape website: http://ift.tt/1nQqJxM

New on 500px : Winter Harbor by Joseph_T_Meirose_IV by Joseph_T_Meirose_IV

Winter Harbor I come all the way to the coast of Maine and what do I photograph? Another Grindstone. Here back home, in the 1000 Islands region of upstate NY, one of the islands I often visit and photograph is Grindstone Island. Perhaps it was naive of me to think it was the only place called Grindstone. None of the islands in this image are named Grindstone though. But, the waterway to the extreme right, behind the tree in this picture, is called Grindstone Ledge, and the distant shoreline behind that is called Grindstone Point. Being severely deprived of sleep on day 6 of 9, and giddy to finally see some light and color, I found the name familiarity interesting. Anyway, this body of water is called Winter Harbor with Mark Island on the left and Ned Island on the right with Mt. Desert Island (Acadia National Park) and Bar Harbor in the distant background. The tallest land feature on the left is Cadillac Mountain. Shot from the west side of Scoodic Point, Maine. *My images are not for sale through 500px, please visit http://ift.tt/1n4SFrz for all purchases. Thank you.*

New on 500px : Blue Bubbles by Joseph_T_Meirose_IV by Joseph_T_Meirose_IV

Civil Twilight, or The Blue Hour, is much more civilized in evening than in morning. I’m a fan of both but sometimes a bit grumpy during the early one. I know most prefer landscape images to be tack sharp thought the entire scene. I wanted to try something a bit different. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t. Just playing around since there was no pressure during this shooting trip. The Bubbles-Jordan Pond at Acadia National Park, on Mt. Desert Island, coastal Maine.
