New on 500px : Stoke the Flames by JustinGrimm by JustinGrimm

Here is a shot from a couple weekends ago, taken at Pyramid Lake just outside of Jasper with my friend Steve Dublanko.

Our plans to shoot Athabasca Falls fell through after seeing how high and hazy the water was running, so we made the decision to shoot this easily accessible lake instead. With waders in hand, and plenty of time before sunset, we made out way on the well traveled path to this location. For the most part, this lake is tough to shoot because it lacks dynamic compositions to work with, except this small outlet which we had scouted last summer.

As usual, clouds rolled in last minute and made it seem like the sunset would be a bust. We got lucky and the only clouds in the entire sky that lit up were exactly where we needed them. A successful relaxing photo shoot!…..minus the mother Grizzly and her 2 cubs we had to scare off the only path on the way back to the car. It was both of our first encounters with bears while shooting, and hopefully not a regular occurrence in the future.

Thanks for checking it out, and especially following 😀

New on 500px : RED LIGHT MOMENTS by EdwinMartinez by EdwinMartinez

Canmore, Alberta Canada | March 2014

Another shot from Canmore, Alberta. The mountains on the photo is made up of three peaks namely; Ship’s Prow, Ehegay Nakoda and Haling Peak. This is a shot I made when the sun was beginning to rise and it’s first light showering the peaks a phenomena often called Alpen Glow.

As per wikipedia –

ALPEN GLOW is an optical phenomenon in which a horizontal red glowing band is observed on the horizon opposite to the sun. This effect occurs when the Sun is just below the horizon. Alpenglow is easiest to observe when mountains are illuminated but can also be observed when the sky is illuminated through backscattering.

Since the Sun is below the horizon, there is no direct path for the light to reach the mountain. Instead, light reflects off airborne snow, water, or ice particles low in the atmosphere. These conditions differentiate between a normal sunrise or sunset and alpenglow.

New on 500px : Land of the Giants – 2014 by jeffclow by jeffclow

Driving north of the Columbia Icefields in Jasper National Park…..the giant mountains make an individual feel very small. And if you look closely, you’ll see a full size car at the base of the mountain on the highway.
