It’s amazing reflecting on this photo and realizing just how old the objects in the frame are. Being alone at night surrounded by the stars and these ancient trees was such a great and surreal experience. I can’t wait to go back some day!

A solitary bristlecone pine tree sits atop the white mountains of California as the last rays of light cast onto the landscape. It was quite surreal to be standing up here, all alone sitting beneath the tree just waiting for the light. It was almost as if we were having a conversation the entire time, telling me old tales of the surrounding ancient trees. At one point, realization set in, and I had to remember that I will be long gone before this tree ever comes down. Truly a breathtaking experience (literally and figuratively)!

On the weekend after my 30th birthday, I drove high up to the White Mountains in California to check out the gnarled ancient bristlecone pine trees in honor of me getting old. These trees are more than 5000 years old. They have seen the world change and probably went through a lot. Who knows what kind of memories they have.

This was my third time going up to the White Mountains to get that just right shot.
I slept in the suv until 1 in the morning then took the hike up to my favorite tree.
The clouds were spotty but I had some openings.
This is my first post of this photo shoot I hope you like it.

Ancient Neighbors; Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, California. This tree may be old (4-5000 years) but it is dwarfed in comparison by the 13.2 billion year old Milky Way that watches above. I first shot here back in October of last year when it was 9 degrees out (with fresh cougar tracks in the snow) and made the decision to come back when the threat of death wasn’t as likely. I’m glad I did since the summer MW is brightest this time of year. Enjoy!

To be amongst some of the oldest living trees in the world is quite a unique experience. My night at Patriarch Grove in particular was unforgettable. The moonless sky was like nothing I had ever seen before, and the beautiful white rock reflected all of the star glow. This glow provided natural ambient light for not only the photographs, but also to help us see where we were going without LED headlamps. The green cast you are seeing in the sky is called “airglow” and it is natural to the photograph. I was able to take this photograph with one exposure and some post processing, although I did not light up the tree or do any exposure blending. This is one RAW frame with color correction, contrast, noise reduction, and selective dodging and burning. Words can not express how beautiful the sky was up in the White Mountains of California, however, I hope this photograph does some justice to what I saw there that night.

I was very lucky during this trip because the weather conditions in Eastern Sierra were phenomenal. I got beautiful lights during sunsets and clear sky during nights, having this oppturnity to enjoy such beautiful sights I just cannot help wanting go there again.
