New on 500px : Double Arch Panorama, Arches National Park by WaynePinkston by WaynePinkston

Double Arch at night, Arches National Park, Utah, USA. This is a “panorama” of multiple vertical photos stitched together. These were taken with a 15mm Sigma fisheye lens, so there is some distortion I could not correct for, but the idea was to show both arches of Double Arch, as well as the Milky Way showing through the “roof”. The arch is lit with static or constant light. I used 2 Digital LED Video Lights. These are from a company called F&V and it is called the Z96 kit (96 LEDs). They are dimmable, and come with a “Warm” filter and a “Diffusion” filter both of which I used. They are made for video, but work great for this use. This is a good solution if you are alone and is more consistent than light painting. Several nights later I came back and used 4 lights to attempt more uniform lighting, which I will post later.

New on 500px : Turret Arch Reflections by miketaylorphoto by miketaylorphoto

A rare puddle from an afternoon shower makes for nice reflections along the walkway to Turret Arch in Arches National Park, Moab Utah. The moon came up as a sliver behind me and offered just the right amount of illumination on the arch and the foreground at 4 AM. The light pollution on the horizon below the Milky Way is coming from the town of Moab. This image is a single exposure that was processed through Lightroom 5 twice – once for the foreground and once for the sky – and blended through Photoshop CS5.

New on 500px : Delicate Night by DavidKinghamPhotography by DavidKinghamPhotography

I’ve left the southwest for the year and am headed to the Tetons for the summer! I had some unforgettable times during my workshops and was fortunate to meet some amazing people.

This is a composite of 6 different images, a base image for the stars at ISO 6400, f/2, 15 secs, several light painted exposures at ISO 1600, f/2.8, 10 secs and a long exposure for the midground at ISO 3200, f/2.8, 7 mins to bring in some detail in the distant rocks and mountains, all with a Sigma 35mm f/1.4. Blended using lighten blending modes and luminosity masks. Who else has made this hike at night?

New on 500px : Nature’s Delicate Balance by MikeBerenson by MikeBerenson

In life, there are a lot of places where we can see a balance. There’s a balance between artificial and natural lighting and another one between day and night. But then on another level, there’s a balance of life between humanity and nature. And then there’s the balance between our planet earth and all the external forces that affect it.

For me, it’s all a delicate balance that I love to show off in my photography. This image was captured at the beginning of twilight (before sunrise) from Delicate Arch during one of my night photography workshops in Arches National Park.

New on 500px : Delicate Discovery by Shainblum by Shainblum

VIEW ON BLACK

“Delicate Discovery”

One of the many images from my night at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. It was an interesting shooting experience for me. Most of the time when I shoot the Milky Way I am alone or with one other person, we usually do not run into any other photographers during the night. At Delicate Toby and I shared the space with over 15 other photographers who all wanted a turn to “light paint” the arch. It made it had for me, as I usually shoot with only ambient light. If I need more light in the foreground I will usually try to do long 2-5 minute exposures. Overall it was a really great experience, the wait for the spot to be empty was incredibly worth it!

The Milky Way galaxy makes a dramatic background for Corona Arch, located in Bootlegger Canyon just outside of Moab, Utah. The opening of Corona Arch is 140 feet tall and 105 feet wide. During this photography workshop the arch was lit with an orange LED to match the surrounding landscape. There was quite a bit of airglow in the sky this evening. This image is a blend of two shots, one for the sky and one for the foreground. Processed and blended via Lightroom 5 & Photoshop CS5.

New on 500px : Milky Way Pull At Balanced Rock by MikeBerenson by MikeBerenson

Milky Way skies have a certain magnetism that most any night photographer has experienced. Every spring it gets us up early and every summer, it keeps us up into the late hours of the night – all to get a glimpse and a capture of the wonderful galaxy we live in.

In contrast to the draw to capture the Milky Way skies, I thought this scene with Balanced Rock seemingly getting pulled toward the Milky Way was especially interesting. And with the summer night skies fast approaching, I know I’m feeling that same Milky Way Pull…
