Better On Black!

After a rainy, cloudy, and stormy day near the Grand Canyon, Toby Harriman and I found a nice spot to camp. After hours of overcast weather we started to see a big opening in the clouds. Guess what it was full of? ….STARS! I took a few shots of the Galaxy, it was a beautiful night.

New on 500px : My First Camping ! by Mardy by Mardy

My First Camping !

One night on the Veal Sre 500 of Bokor mountain where is the best tourism spot of Kingdom of Cambodia, we did camping with some of media team, I and my group photographer found the Milky Way during that time and we can see very clear and close with it, by the way our trip was supported by Great Angkor Tour.

I am Mardy SUONG, I am from the one of Cambodian Photographers. I wish to extend my heartfelt welcome to all international visitors and photographers to Cambodia-Kingdom of Wonder.

As one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in Southeast Asia, Cambodia’s rich heritage, cultural and natural resources offer a full range of cultural and eco-tourism sites that are both dynamic and sustainable. Highlights include Phnom Penh, the Angkor Wat and the Mekong River Dolphins, just to name a few.

The Kingdom’s capital is a dynamic city where visitors are in the mood for shopping, dining, sightseeing and more. As Cambodia’s hub for commerce, politics and tourism, Phnom Penh is also home to many important institutions and monuments such as Wat Phnom, the Royal Palace and the National Museum. The magnificent Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear, Heritage of Humanity and World Wonder, is probably the most exotic tourist destination in the world and the renowned yet very rare Mekong River dolphins can also be found in Cambodia. During your staying here, do visit and relax on Cambodia’s pristine beaches, explore the coral reefs around many of our beautiful islands and trek through lush mangrove forests. The bay of Cambodia has been inducted to the Most Beautiful Bay of the World Club.

Regards and thanks!

New on 500px : Asleep under the Milky Way by abirkill by abirkill

A while ago a friend got in touch and asked if I wanted to go and take some star shots at Porteau Cove. Although I’ve shot this location at night quite a lot, I didn’t have any other plans, so I figured why not!

The forecast looked a bit touch and go, but was good in Vancouver, which suggested we might have a good chance looking towards the south, which is also where the most interesting part of the Milky Way was. Although there was quite a lot of glow from the cities of Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, there was also good visibility of the Milky Way. The glow also nicely silhouetted Anvil Island, making it stand out clearly on the horizon.

We also took along a tent to act as a prop. Even though using a tent as a prop in night sky photography is about as cliched as photographing a street of yellow cabs in New York, there’s no denying it is an effective foreground element! I used an app on my phone that allows the screen to be set to display any colour to light the tent from inside, allowing us to control the appearance of the tent. A warm yellow-orange setting simulated candlelight quite well, and the tent nicely diffused the light.

To increase sharpness and reduce noise, I took two different shots to make up this image, a 20 second exposure of the stars at f/2.8, ISO 3200, and a 2.5 minute exposure of the ground at f/2.8, ISO 400. The two exposures were equivalent in brightness, allowing me to easily blend the longer, less-noisy ground detail in with the shorter exposure of the sky.

In the world’s biggest cave, Hang Son Doong or Mountain River Cave in Vietnam, clouds form near sections of collapsed cave ceiling. This is an early morning view over camp one.

New on 500px : Banner Peak by BlakeDeBock by BlakeDeBock

It was 2:15 when I crawled out of my hammock and woke my Dad up to see the stars. We started a fire and warmed up as much as we could before we left. It was our second night and I woke up rufus to come along like always, but there was no way I was getting that dog up. We were all pushed past our limits the day before and barely made it over the ridge to this lake. We had to carry our packs through a freezing river and then pull ourselves through the last mile of intense snow covered uphill.

I knew the milky way would be just where I wanted it latest in the night; but If I shot the picture to late in the morning the sunrise light will ruin it. We left camp and hiked to this vantage point and turned off our lights. 3:42am is when I took this 30 second photograph, along with 6 others just in case. One of which was an 8 minute exposure. I actually tried some exposure masking but im not very good at it. I decided against it. This is one photograph, one exposure, not a composite, and all natural light.

Im blessed to sit with my father at 10,000ft elevation and share this incredible moment with him. “In the end, its not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away” – Shing Xiong

New on 500px : Witchcraft by Shainblum by Shainblum

PLEASE VIEW ON BLACK!

To be amongst some of the oldest living trees in the world is quite a unique experience. My night at Patriarch Grove in particular was unforgettable. The moonless sky was like nothing I had ever seen before, and the beautiful white rock reflected all of the star glow. This glow provided natural ambient light for not only the photographs, but also to help us see where we were going without LED headlamps. The green cast you are seeing in the sky is called “airglow” and it is natural to the photograph. I was able to take this photograph with one exposure and some post processing, although I did not light up the tree or do any exposure blending. This is one RAW frame with color correction, contrast, noise reduction, and selective dodging and burning. Words can not express how beautiful the sky was up in the White Mountains of California, however, I hope this photograph does some justice to what I saw there that night.

New on 500px : Delicate Discovery by Shainblum by Shainblum

“Delicate Discovery”

One of the many images from my night at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. It was an interesting shooting experience for me. Most of the time when I shoot the Milky Way I am alone or with one other person, we usually do not run into any other photographers during the night. At Delicate Toby and I shared the space with over 15 other photographers who all wanted a turn to “light paint” the arch. It made it had for me, as I usually shoot with only ambient light. If I need more light in the foreground I will usually try to do long 2-5 minute exposures. Overall it was a really great experience, the wait for the spot to be empty was incredibly worth it!
