The blue color of the mud comes from the silica rich waters surrounding the area. When the mud dries it cracks and forms these interesting patterns. The hole and the cracks are actually quite small as they are shot very close with a wide angle lens. It did not stay there too long as I am sure the lens and camera would not handle boiling hot mud very well in case the hole spewed something out.
