New on 500px : Fire Wisps by Pcoskun by Pcoskun

I’ve gone through pretty much all of my images from my Eastern Sierra trip, and am now wanting to get back out and explore and photograph new scenes. This is another image from mono lake. I had found this composition prior to sunset and saw how the clouds were building up right above the scene. Right at sunset, the high clouds caught the fiery oranges and reds of sunset and reflected onto the tufa formations and water itself.

New on 500px : Granite Eye by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

It’s dark on purpose, intended to be viewed on black.

This is a shot I’ve been hoping to nail down for about 5 years now, after discovering this comp on a solo trip trough the Eastern Sierras. I’ve gotten some great light here over the years, but have never quite managed to come up with a shot that did this place any justice. I think I finally have come up with a rendition that truly does this spot justice… putting much emphasis on the arch and massive pillars of granite.

To dial this one in it was an exposure blend and focus blend. I did a bit of texture work to get all the detail to pop, but in a non-overdone way that is a bit more palatable. I also did quite a bit of work with levels through some luminosity masks to dial in the overall feel to the light balance. Some dodging and burning to add some emphasis here and there to light, shadow, and color. Varied white balance adjustments to add a little depth. Some warping to fine tune the composition And uh… some other stuff I’m sure, but I forget.

Anyways, I recently released a tutorial video that covers some of the techniques I use in my processing. I also lead in-field workshops, teach processing online via Skype screen sharing, and blah blah blah.

Also, I’m happy to announce that I will be co-leading a tour in March with my friend Arild Heitmann! 10 epic days of chasing light across Norway. Mountains, beaches, beaches with mountains, Aurora, long arctic sunrises and sunsets. It’s destined to be the trip of lifetime!

You can check it all out at Ryan Dyar Photography.

New on 500px : I’ll Be Here When You’re Gone by Pcoskun by Pcoskun

A solitary bristlecone pine tree sits atop the white mountains of California as the last rays of light cast onto the landscape. It was quite surreal to be standing up here, all alone sitting beneath the tree just waiting for the light. It was almost as if we were having a conversation the entire time, telling me old tales of the surrounding ancient trees. At one point, realization set in, and I had to remember that I will be long gone before this tree ever comes down. Truly a breathtaking experience (literally and figuratively)!

New on 500px : Taken for Granite by Pcoskun by Pcoskun

I normally try not to post similar images from various shoots, nor do I really enjoy punny titles. However, my time spent near glacier point in Yosemite offered some pretty incredible light, and came with some unfortunate news. I arrived here in the early afternoon after photographing in Yosemite valley and just didn’t know what to do. It was fairly mild outside and I didn’t feel like hiking by myself, and I drove back and forth up the road just wondering if its going to be worth sticking up around here for sunset and then stars later on. I had a near three hour drive back across the park to get to where I was camping, but I was in the area, and ultimately stuck it out. I parked on the side of the road, and walked across where there was a really nice view overlooking Yosemite. I still had about six hours until sunset, so I decided to take a nap on the rocks as I peered out to this view. It was somehow one of the most comfortable naps I’ve ever had, yet it didn’t last long. As many people approached the view they kept waking me asking if I could take their photo. I met a lot of interesting people up here, and its one of those things I enjoy most about traveling. A couple ladies had noted to me that I had a visitor while I was “sleeping”, I guess there was a squirrel staring me in the face just inches away, but luckily decided to leave me alone. Finally, the light was starting to get good. The clouds were starting to spread apart. The entire time I was thinking that this was all a dream. How could I be so fortunate to be able to witness such a vista? Yes, its a fairly popular one that has been photographed hundreds of times, but can you really blame those who keep coming here to replicate what they have seen? I will tell you, that no photo will do this scene justice. You just had to have been there, like most photos. I never take for granted the beautiful landscapes that surround me, because I’ll never know if this is the last one I’ll see….They can disappear without warning…

New on 500px : Tufa Taffy by Pcoskun by Pcoskun

Nothing too special here. Sunset light paints mono lakes tufa formations in pink and orange hues.

New on 500px : Eyes Over Yosemite by Pcoskun by Pcoskun

Glacier point in Yosemite National Park offers one of the most dramatic views in the west IMO. It’s quite difficult to comprehend this view through an image, and only peering over the valley in person will make you feel like you are in a dream. This point offers a unique view of Yosemite capturing a few of the parks Iconic features. The peak in the middle that is lit up is half dome. It was interesting to zoom in and see hikers and climbers clinging to the walls and on the top. To the right are two rushing waterfalls, Nevada and Vernal falls. You could hear their force echo from this spot and to have this one particular location basically all to myself made it quite a special moment. This is a panoramic stitch of five images for extra detail and would make an incredible print!

New on 500px : Witchcraft by Shainblum by Shainblum

PLEASE VIEW ON BLACK!

To be amongst some of the oldest living trees in the world is quite a unique experience. My night at Patriarch Grove in particular was unforgettable. The moonless sky was like nothing I had ever seen before, and the beautiful white rock reflected all of the star glow. This glow provided natural ambient light for not only the photographs, but also to help us see where we were going without LED headlamps. The green cast you are seeing in the sky is called “airglow” and it is natural to the photograph. I was able to take this photograph with one exposure and some post processing, although I did not light up the tree or do any exposure blending. This is one RAW frame with color correction, contrast, noise reduction, and selective dodging and burning. Words can not express how beautiful the sky was up in the White Mountains of California, however, I hope this photograph does some justice to what I saw there that night.
