Sitting behind the lee of of our baby 4×4, Marianne and I escaped the full force of the wind on this day in the highlands of Iceland. Previously at Ljotipollur, we had been bowled over while sitting down with our tripods!. The shifting light danced across the hills so rapidly here it was amazing to watch.

This shot was taken on our trip to the Pacific Northwest in 2013 during a couple of unusual things happened. One was influenza (which wasn’t too unusual given the age of charlotte at the time). The second was that Oregon went through a 2 week phase of blue sky weather uninterrupted! On this morning, the trip up to Tom Dick and Harry Mountain was a pleasant walk by moonlight with blustery winds up top (hence the lit trees moving). It’s such a beautiful spot and walk that of course in the future, it is another location on the ‘redo’ list and hopefully with some fit little ones tagging along!

A messy evening, messy sodden images but the only thing I’m happy with this image is that it shows things were pretty wild! I had this idea in my head that in my waterproofs and with the camera and remote wrapped , I could fire shots and blend them later. Several buffets of wind while sitting and several dumps of waves later, I realised that I wasn’t going to be able to keep the whole setup still to have the images lined up. And then that faint light disappeared and so did I – to get all nice and warm back in our accommodation in Normanville!
( I half thought about getting myself into the frame to do the mickey mouse fantasia tribute but decided against losing my gear 😛 )

The Glen Brittle area in Southern Skye is one of the locations (of many) that I have pencilled down for many a return trip in the future once I can afford the time , travel cost, and independent enough kids to share the experience with. This is one of the easier hikes in the area which just happened to start glowing while the gear was stowed away. As soon as the tripod was in the right position, true gloom set in for the evening and the distant passing light had passed for good. Scotland was memorable for its passing light in our trip there in 2010.

A wintry sunset at Lake Barmera taken in 2013. At the time, Charlotte was on my back calling for mummy to come over. I did want to get lower to catch more of the reflection but in the end, Charlie won and I left this long exposure going while walking over to mummy taking her shot of the scene. VEEFcakes FTW.

Probably not much more needs to be said about this location. Lately , not being able to shoot because of the new baby has been a little frustrating (especially watching the stream of awesome images from the people I follow here and elsewhere) but has been a good time for reflection. I’ve noticed that I’ve had negative feelings creeping in about what other people are doing or shooting and really, that is just so absurd and out of place with why I started shooting that I’d like to shoot it dead now. I still remember the awe of seeing this spot (especially after 2 days rain clearing) and I really shouldn’t let the fact that it is photographed so often now detract anything from my experience. So I wont 🙂 So here it is , another representation of our joy shooting this spot !

We loved our two days around Silverton in October 2013 – A fantastic small town vibe and amazing scenery all around the town. Charlotte managed to get to most of the ten waterfalls in the state park but I didn’t dare take her to Abiqua falls – that’s for a future adventure!

I’ve always been intrigued with the possibility of photographing a moonlit foreground at moonset with the milky way without blending exposures (Edit : that should read without blending exposures from different times of the night – a longer exposure was taken for the foreground at the time as the moon was getting dim quickly). This was the one time I’ve been able to get to a spot to take such an image – eerie being out there but great fun too!
