Last week I was lucky enough to spend a very long and very eye opening day with Brian Kibbons exploring little visited locations in Washington State’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest. To say the least, it was the most excited I’ve felt about shooting waterfalls and creeks in a very long time. So much new ground to cover and explore. This image was taken in the most spectacular waterfall location I’ve visited and may surpass any location I’ve seen in the Columbia River Gorge. My mind was absolutely blown. Brian, with his photographic memory, drove us down seemingly endless miles of forest service roads, screeching to a halt when I saw a small pink ribbon tied to a tree. “This is our Spot.” We grabbed our bags and bushwhacked down a steep and burly hillside for a while before popping out just down stream from this falls. When I saw what we were heading for I just shook my head and started smiling. Can’t wait to get back into this area again.

Here is a shot from a couple weekends ago, taken at Pyramid Lake just outside of Jasper with my friend Steve Dublanko.

Our plans to shoot Athabasca Falls fell through after seeing how high and hazy the water was running, so we made the decision to shoot this easily accessible lake instead. With waders in hand, and plenty of time before sunset, we made out way on the well traveled path to this location. For the most part, this lake is tough to shoot because it lacks dynamic compositions to work with, except this small outlet which we had scouted last summer.

As usual, clouds rolled in last minute and made it seem like the sunset would be a bust. We got lucky and the only clouds in the entire sky that lit up were exactly where we needed them. A successful relaxing photo shoot!…..minus the mother Grizzly and her 2 cubs we had to scare off the only path on the way back to the car. It was both of our first encounters with bears while shooting, and hopefully not a regular occurrence in the future.

Thanks for checking it out, and especially following 😀

This colorful sunset caught us while working on the hillsides of the Tromen Volcano (Argentinean Patagonia), and is definitely one of the more saturated sunsets I’ve ever witnessed!. This incredible Patagonian volcano is found close to the Buta Ranquil Town (Neuquén Province), and has a extensive lava field developed during two distinct volcanic eruptions occurred during historical times, the oldest one happening between 1400 AD and 1752 AD, and the youngest one occurring during the 1820s.
