New on 500px : Mount Sinopah by PerriSchelat by PerriSchelat

I’ve shot at Two Medicine Lake so many times and pretty much got skunked on color and amazing light every time.

On this morning I woke to rain. Big clouds sat on top of Mount Sinopah before dawn. By sunrise the skies were clearing and the rain moved out. Clearing storms do bring such pretty light.

Mount Sinopah is famous for turning blood red when the right clouds and light reflect upon it.

New on 500px : Spring Thaw by PerriSchelat by PerriSchelat

I rode my bike 12 miles through the Many Glacier Valley to Swiftcurrent Lake in Glacier National Park this year during early Spring. My main concern was avoiding Grizzly bears just waking up from a long winter. Nothing will make a girl pedal faster or sing Jingle Bells louder than the idea of running into a hungry bear.

There is a very small window in which to capture ice melt on Swiftcurrent Lake. I hoped to get Mount Grinnell reflecting in open water. The park experienced a very cold Winter with lots of snow, so I knew melting would be late this year.

The first day I rode my bike in I scouted and found conditions close to what I wanted, but the light wasn’t any good and the wind was whipping through, so I rode my bike back in a second day and found much better sunrise light and still waters.

I rode a total of 48 miles over the course of 2 days to get this shot. I like it, because I’ve never seen another one like it. Trying to be a photographic pioneer in this day and age is hard, because everybody is trying to do the same thing. I lived very close to Glacier and had photographed in the park for 6 years, so I knew nobody would be there and I’m pleased to have something that is uniquely mine.

New on 500px : All Is Calm by candacebartlett by candacebartlett

Best if viewed on black, so please click on the image.

Fog settles in on Bowman Lake as the last light of day shows through the clouds in the northwest corner of Glacier National Park.

Bowman isn’t nearly as popular as some of the other areas at GNP. You have to drive very slowly on long, bumpy and windy dirt roads to get to this location, but It was nice to get away from the Summer crowds for a day. My boyfriend Ryan and I had the whole place to ourselves on this evening.

Sinopah Mountain looms over Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park. This one definitely looks better viewed on black if you have a moment 🙂

New on 500px : Shadow of Greatness by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

I recently reworked this file. Taking the time to finesse it a bit more with different approaches to how I managed the light. It’s a tough scene to process due to the light just going flat at this spot during sunset while in the shadow of this wall of peaks. Working the contrasts and luminosity to make things pop a bit more, while adding in a bit of glowing light up top seems to bring it back to life… but I left it dark enough that it still looks shadowy and secluded.

I teach all of this stuff online via Skype screen sharing. I have also released my first video of these series I am working on about post processing. This stuff, as well as all sorts of other stuff, can be found at Ryan Dyar Photography.

Also, I’m happy to announce that I will be co-leading a tour in March with my friend Arild Heitmann! 10 epic days of chasing light across Norway. Mountains, beaches, beaches with mountains, Aurora, long arctic sunrises and sunsets. It’s destined to be the trip of lifetime!

New on 500px : It’s Oh So Quiet by candacebartlett by candacebartlett

This really needs to be viewed on a black background, so please click on the image.

An enjoyable evening out shooting with my boyfriend Ryan above the Grinnell Lake area in Glacier National Park. I’m getting excited for upcoming hiking and backpacking trips out in the mountains this Summer and decided to reprocess this one. Thank you for taking a look. 🙂
