I will forever return to my favorite park in the NPS system, something about these mountains that rise above sage brush plains that keep calling me back. This year my focus was timing the arrowleaf balsamroot bloom in the flats of the valley. I timed it ok… 😉 This year’s bloom didn’t disappoint, even if I didn’t get the spectacular pink sunrise I’d envisioned in my mind.

Utah, southern, Hiking through an Alcove near Jacob Hamblin Arch in Coyote Gulch. There are some impressive and unique landscape features in Coyote Gulch in the Escalante National Monument of southern Utah. I found this Alcove next to the Jacob Hamblin Arch as striking as the arch itself. I’ve seen some pretty good images of the arch so I opted to work on this spot in order to perhaps get something a little different.

Utah, southern, Dramatic panoramic of Zion Canyon in Zion National Park. Capturing the grandeur of a large landscape scene can be one of the most difficult challenges. Far to often the magnificence is lost when rendered on a small two dimensional plane. A lifetime is spent in search of ideal conditions along with beautiful light that might, among other things, create the illusion of a three dimensional space. This clearing storm in Zion National Park of southern Utah was just such an opportunity. I refer to it sometimes as the attempt to do a landscape justice. When the conditions are right, everything has to be done correctly in what can be a very short period of time. Over the decades I’ve missed far more opportunities than I’ve been successful at. It’s the nature of the game and the learning process.

A beautiful sunrise at Schwabachers Landing located in the Grand Teton National Park. You can see the distant Grand Teton range reflecting in the snake river. Distant smoke and fog line the base of the mountains. The aspens are in peak color as well as the warm sage and brush lining the river.
