New on 500px : Summer Dells Sunset by Pcoskun by Pcoskun

There wasn’t much storm activity going on around Phoenix, so fellow photographer Nathaniel Smalley and I made a short trip up to Prescott’s beautiful Watson Lake. Driving up the I-17 it looked as if the entire town was being dumped on with rain. One of the largest rain shafts I have seen off in the distance. Getting closer, a couple sprinkles fell onto the roads, and with the sun breaking through, I knew there was a chance for rainbows. It wasn’t long after that we decided to head down a random dirt road and and capture the brilliant rainbow that seemed to last as long as the previous one. We still had about an hour until sunset and about a half hour from our intended destination. We quickly made our way up to the lake and just like last time, by the time we made it the rainbow had just began to vanish. Oh well, 3rd times a charm right? Moments later, the skies began to light up all around as the major storm system had moved further north. It was nice to get a couple of fresh images from here, and I am sure I will be back soon enough. This place is just too beautiful!

New on 500px : Granite Eye by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

It’s dark on purpose, intended to be viewed on black.

This is a shot I’ve been hoping to nail down for about 5 years now, after discovering this comp on a solo trip trough the Eastern Sierras. I’ve gotten some great light here over the years, but have never quite managed to come up with a shot that did this place any justice. I think I finally have come up with a rendition that truly does this spot justice… putting much emphasis on the arch and massive pillars of granite.

To dial this one in it was an exposure blend and focus blend. I did a bit of texture work to get all the detail to pop, but in a non-overdone way that is a bit more palatable. I also did quite a bit of work with levels through some luminosity masks to dial in the overall feel to the light balance. Some dodging and burning to add some emphasis here and there to light, shadow, and color. Varied white balance adjustments to add a little depth. Some warping to fine tune the composition And uh… some other stuff I’m sure, but I forget.

Anyways, I recently released a tutorial video that covers some of the techniques I use in my processing. I also lead in-field workshops, teach processing online via Skype screen sharing, and blah blah blah.

Also, I’m happy to announce that I will be co-leading a tour in March with my friend Arild Heitmann! 10 epic days of chasing light across Norway. Mountains, beaches, beaches with mountains, Aurora, long arctic sunrises and sunsets. It’s destined to be the trip of lifetime!

You can check it all out at Ryan Dyar Photography.

New on 500px : Vermilion Bliss by nevadax1 by nevadax1

The notorious Bonsai Rock in Lake Tahoe Nevada is bathed in the light of a colorful sunset. The dark silhouette of the giant boulders is a sharp contrast the colorful sky and water. Vermilion is a color that ranges from a vivid red to reddish orange and I thought it was an apt description for this photo. Although this area has been photographed many times, the light and conditions are always different. I hope you like this version. Thanks for looking!

New on 500px : Last Light on Clouds Rest by Darvin by Darvin

The last bit of light lands atop Clouds Rest in the distance with Half Dome still illuminated by the sunlight reflecting off the clouds above. Distant peaks on the horizon glow in the last bit of sunlight complementing the colors of the deep blue green forest. It’s hard to convey the wonder of this sight. Half Dome is massive and rises vertically above the canyon below. This view is taken from the cliffs of Glacier Point looking eastward. Just to the left off camera a 3000 foot straight drop to Yosemite Valley below. I have to say resting against a rock down in the trees gives a bit more feeling of security than does standing on the cliffs and offers some foreground that nicely frames the stunning High Sierra Nevada in the distance.

New on 500px : Eyes Over Yosemite by Pcoskun by Pcoskun

Glacier point in Yosemite National Park offers one of the most dramatic views in the west IMO. It’s quite difficult to comprehend this view through an image, and only peering over the valley in person will make you feel like you are in a dream. This point offers a unique view of Yosemite capturing a few of the parks Iconic features. The peak in the middle that is lit up is half dome. It was interesting to zoom in and see hikers and climbers clinging to the walls and on the top. To the right are two rushing waterfalls, Nevada and Vernal falls. You could hear their force echo from this spot and to have this one particular location basically all to myself made it quite a special moment. This is a panoramic stitch of five images for extra detail and would make an incredible print!

New on 500px : The Unforgettable Fire by nevadax1 by nevadax1

It’s hard to say which sunset is the most brilliant I’ve ever seen, but I would say this one over Lake Tahoe is certainly in the top three. This sunset was truly spectacular to witness. Fortunately, I had my camera with me. This photo needed virtually no post processing. The dark silhouettes of the granite boulders almost form a perfect frame around the red sky reflected in the calm lake. It will always be unforgettable to me. I hope you like it too.

The Ploumanac’h lighthouse (officially the Mean Ruz lighthouse) is an active lighthouse in Côtes-d’Armor, France, located in Perros-Guirec. The lighthouse is closed to the public.

The structure is composed of pink granite, and marks the entrance to the channel leading to the port of Ploumanac’h.

The first Ploumanac’h lighthouse dates from 1860. This was destroyed in 1944, and replaced by the current lighthouse in 1946. The present-day version was planned by architect Henry Auffret, and built by Martin et frère (a local construction company).
