New on 500px : Dark Was the Day by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

The Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossils Beds is really one of the more surreal places you can lay your eyes on in Oregon. The striations of different colored clays (which you can see better if you view this on black) create an almost alien landscape that is a dream for us landscape shooters.

This is a photo from higher up above the standard viewpoint, but caution must be taken not to step off trail as to avoid making tracks in the delicate and unspoiled land. This was taken on my 7th trip out to this area where I was finally greeted with the dramatic sunrise light I was after.

Anyways, I recently released a tutorial video that covers some of the techniques I use in my processing (ones that were used in the making of this image). I also lead in-field workshops, teach processing online via Skype screen sharing, and blah blah blah.

Also, I’m happy to announce that I will be co-leading a tour in March with my friend Arild Heitmann! 10 epic days of chasing light across Norway. Mountains, beaches, beaches with mountains, Aurora, long arctic sunrises and sunsets. It’s destined to be the trip of lifetime!

You can check it all out at Ryan Dyar Photography.
