New on 500px : 桂林市 10 Billion on Google – thanks! Here’s a new photo from 广西 Guangxi by TreyRatcliff by TreyRatcliff

Thanks for the 10 billion views over on Google! I know it’s gauche to put contests here on 500px, so I won’t! 🙂 But to celebrate, I am giving away 10 free tutorials over on Google and FB, at http://ift.tt/WFPvje and http://ift.tt/1v05hWZ respectively. Thanks again for all the views, for those of you that follow me over there!

I’ve been posting to Google for quite a while, but I’ve been posting here on 500px for the past few days… maybe I should post more? There are so many amazing photos here… and so many photos of hot chicks — jesus it is distracting, I tell you.

Anyhoo… I am uploading this new photo (19,000 pixels across for the orig!) that I just captured in the sweet spot in the northern bits of the Guangxi province, just to the south of the Guizhou and Hunan provinces of China. 桂林市 – 广西. I am standing on top of another spire (just like the ones you see!), and it was incredibly difficult, to say the least. Here’s the story.

It was a muggy day, the sort where you feel your t-shirt sticking to you before you even realize it. We hired some local guides, who then hired even more local guides to help show the way to the spire we wanted to ascend. Boy was it grueling! Jagged rocks, thorny bushes, all-fours most of the way. Sometimes the only thing to hold onto was a thorn bush or a glassy-evil-jaded rock. At the top, I looked down to see all kinds of grisly lacerations… but gathered my wits to get this photo! My bff Tom Anderson was very smart and wore more clothes than me to keep his skin baby-smooth. This photo is a panorama, which I don’t normally do, but the Dr. Seuss countryside there is so vast and overpowering, it was kind of the only way to bring it all together.

I think I’ll go back here again… if you wanna come along, sign up for our newsletter at http://ift.tt/1gjJSBn — or if you wanna go on your own, I’ll take time to detail everything there including how to contact some local guides so you can find the same spot.

Anyway, thanks again for all the views and I’m happy you enjoy them so much here and other places on the interwebs… I used to do this back in the day when it was just me and my mom that would look at the photos… she still comes every day — hi mom! And don’t worry, I got down safe and I’m putting aloe vera on the wounds just like you taught me!

New on 500px : Fisherman of Dreams by Joel_Santos by Joel_Santos

I’ve been photographing this area in Guangxi province, China, since 2006 and witnessing the fast decay of the cormorant fisherman. The youngest fisherman are attracted by new and more profitable jobs, opening the way for the disappearing of a traditional craft and culture.

New on 500px : Guilin Hilltop by myspacetom by myspacetom

Just got back from an incredible trip in China, and the highlight is what you see here before you. Climbing to this Guilin mountaintop was rather treacherous; slick sharp rocks dotted the path, that is not exactly a path. My BFF Trey Ratcliff who was with me during this climb cut himself up pretty bad. The way down in the dark was even worse. But even with the scrapes, humidity and muddy pants, I felt oh so lucky to have witnessed this sunset: color in the sky is really rare down here. I’m still buzzing about it 4 days later 🙂

This is a single image processed in Lightroom and Photoshop; no composites or brackets.
