Super moon rose over Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park, Canadian Rockies. Taken in June 2013.

I was wondering around the lake at 10pm, looking for a nice view point and wondering what to do if I encountered a bear. Then I saw the moon rising, and I find the view so mesmerising and I stayed on to take a few more shoots. It was only till the next day when I read the newspaper and I found out that it was actually the super moon of 2013.

Its the refreshing pine smell lining the forest, the damp lichen clinging to the branches, the buzz of mosquitoes, the dry heat of the continental divide. All of this attracts me to this pinnacle moment after a 27km hike to the top of Nub Peak.
The aches, the blisters, the strap sores, they don’t matter. What matters is that I’m here in this moment, seeing this with my own eyes. Watching the last sun hit Mount Assiniboine shading the valley and signing off the day… it couldn’t be any more perfect.

Our plans to shoot Athabasca Falls fell through after seeing how high and hazy the water was running, so we made the decision to shoot this easily accessible lake instead. With waders in hand, and plenty of time before sunset, we made out way on the well traveled path to this location. For the most part, this lake is tough to shoot because it lacks dynamic compositions to work with, except this small outlet which we had scouted last summer.

As usual, clouds rolled in last minute and made it seem like the sunset would be a bust. We got lucky and the only clouds in the entire sky that lit up were exactly where we needed them. A successful relaxing photo shoot!…..minus the mother Grizzly and her 2 cubs we had to scare off the only path on the way back to the car. It was both of our first encounters with bears while shooting, and hopefully not a regular occurrence in the future.

I had to wake up at 4:30am and drive 45 minutes to be able to witness with my own eyes the sun rising and its rays hitting the mountains towering over Moraine Lake. It was definitely worth waking up early to witness such a spectacle!

Night sky at Moraine Lake Banff Alberta. I like this feel and look of vortex star trails. I adjusted this photo in Lightroom and Photoshop and used levels and curves to make the stars brighter. As in the original image you can’t really see them. Other adjustments like mid tones and dodge and burn can be seen in this photo.

This location is great for time-lapse makers and night sky lovers. So I recommend going to this place on a clear night! Thanks for viewing and don’t forget to give a like because it really helps me grow and keeps me motivated to post more of my work.
