New on 500px : The War Path by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

While out on a remote desert playa (not the Alvord however) in Southeast Oregon near the Nevada border, I was treated to one of the most impressive displays of light and weather that I have had the privilege to photograph. Thunder echoed through my tent for most of the night interspersed with the howls of a nearby pack of Coyotes. It really was one of the most surreal nights I’ve ever spent alone in the wilderness.

Anyways, I recently released a tutorial video that covers some of the techniques I use in my processing (ones that were used in the making of this image). I also lead in-field workshops, teach processing online via Skype screen sharing, and blah blah blah.

Also, I’m happy to announce that I will be co-leading a tour in March with my friend Arild Heitmann! 10 epic days of chasing light across Norway. Mountains, beaches, beaches with mountains, Aurora, long arctic sunrises and sunsets. It’s destined to be the trip of lifetime!

You can check it all out at Ryan Dyar Photography.

New on 500px : Dark Was the Day by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

The Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossils Beds is really one of the more surreal places you can lay your eyes on in Oregon. The striations of different colored clays (which you can see better if you view this on black) create an almost alien landscape that is a dream for us landscape shooters.

This is a photo from higher up above the standard viewpoint, but caution must be taken not to step off trail as to avoid making tracks in the delicate and unspoiled land. This was taken on my 7th trip out to this area where I was finally greeted with the dramatic sunrise light I was after.

New on 500px : Shadow of Greatness by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

I recently reworked this file. Taking the time to finesse it a bit more with different approaches to how I managed the light. It’s a tough scene to process due to the light just going flat at this spot during sunset while in the shadow of this wall of peaks. Working the contrasts and luminosity to make things pop a bit more, while adding in a bit of glowing light up top seems to bring it back to life… but I left it dark enough that it still looks shadowy and secluded.

I teach all of this stuff online via Skype screen sharing. I have also released my first video of these series I am working on about post processing. This stuff, as well as all sorts of other stuff, can be found at Ryan Dyar Photography.

New on 500px : All Eyes by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

Yes, yes. This is one of the most iconic compositions from Ruby Beach… hell, even from most of Olympic National Park. But I just wanted to grab it real quick while out there with my friends Miles and Nagesh.

It was a busy night on the beach with a mass transit of photographers, so I ended up having to clone out a few guys from the frame. This is also a stitch of two horizontal frames on top of each other to get the perspective I was after here. Also a couple shots for dynamic range.

I’ve got a new video release I’m working on that covers some of this perspective blending stuff, as well as a few other types of perspective control techniques I use.

There is also a BIG workshop announcement coming up for some epic international Aurora stuff that I’m super duper stoked on.
