This was the gorgeous end to an unforgettable day in Big Sur spent watching whales and dolphins and seals, California condors and ospreys.

McWay Falls, Big Sur, California

While waiting for the Milky Way to rise a couple weeks ago I decided to play with some star trails–not usually my cup of tea but thought it was the perfect opportunity to let the D800E I was borrowing do its thing while I was sprawled out on the ground, listening to the crashing waves and watching for shooting stars.

Every now and then I like these shorter star trails, and once the Milky Way rose the 45 minutes dedicated to this shot was enough. I feel night photography is often even more open-ended than general landscape work, and sometimes I embrace the hell out of light pollution. A large boat was making its way north and added the warm glow, the Milky Way rose in the middle of the trails on the left and because of personal taste I use really cold white balances when shooting the night sky–it just happens to fit into my work flow. And I think it added to this wanna-be-Alex-Grey-esque psychedelic scene.

PLEASE VIEW THIS ON BLACK! I kind of wanted to name this “The Way To McWay MilkyWay” ;P Mc Way Falls is an incredible place located in Big Sur CA. Its always a fun adventure seeing the night sky over the dimly lit waterfall. Everyone captures the falls in a vertical position with the Milky Way overhead. I wanted to include the path as an added element to the image. As for the technicals, yes in fast this is a 2 image exposure blend. One image for the sky with a shorter exposure, then a long exposure for the foreground. I usually try to get it all in one shot, however this foreground was pitch black in the 30 second exposure. Both images were taken one after another in the same position. Contrast, color correction, noise reduction and touch ups were done to help the image aesthetically, that being said, everything you are looking at in this image is real.
