New on 500px : Rising Sky by Gewitterjagd by Gewitterjagd

Standing above the Earth – Thats how I felt while shooting this scene. Right next to me, cliffs fall about 1000m in the depth of the foggy ocean, on the other side, the mountains raised another 500m and right in front of me the infinit night sky showed it’s best.

It is quite awesome for a mid-European to take photos in places where the light pollution isn’t that high, this are moments we never get to see here at home because of our big cities.

I will definitely go back to that place one day!

New on 500px : Celestial Drive by markg by markg

I drove out to the back country area above Hanmer Springs on the South Island of New Zealand to capture this 360 degree seamless pano of the night sky.

There’s quite a lot going on with this image – you have the Milky Way which can be seen arching over the landscape in the right of frame, and below that you can see a natural phenomena know as gravity waves. The glow in the centre of frame is from the lights of Christchurch 130km away, and to the left of that are the Magellanic Clouds, which are a duo of irregular dwarf galaxies visible only from the Southern Hemisphere. The faint triangular glow to the far left of frame is the Zodiacal Light, which is caused by sunlight scattered by space dust in the zodiacal cloud, and in this case, is seen just before morning twilight.

For the tech buffs out there, this image is a 218 megapixel image made up of a stitch of 28 individual images, which were shot on a Gigapan Epic Pro. The images were shot 4 rows vertically by 7 columns horizontally, each on a 24mm lens with an exposure of a 25 second shutter at f/2.8 with an ISO 6400. The whole pano took a total of 14 minutes to shoot with all the images.

100% BETTER ON BLACK!!!

After a long headache and 2 hours on a twisty road we finally arrived at a beautiful meadow in Mt Laguna. As the sunlight fell we were graced with a beautifully vivid night sky. My friends Dan Douglas, Brian Hawkins and Daniel Tomlinson had a blast sharing stories and setting up multiple axis Timelapse shots. As the 4 hour Timelapses were running I decided to capture this 180 degree panorama.

Since I know you guys love the technical details here they are, this Panorama is 15 vertical images taken with the Canon 6D and Nikon 14-24 F/2.8
EXIF: 20Sec F/2.8 ISO6400

If you wanna learn how to take and or process images like this one, check out my new online and in person workshops.

BEST ON BLACK!

Here is a new photograph from one of my favorite spots in California, Santa Ynez. The rolling hills with giant oak trees makes for some awesome foreground with the Milky Way. The bright spots on the horizon is not the sun setting, but actually the Light Pollution from Los Angeles county. I hope you guys enjoy the photograph.

I teach workshops for photography and timelapse on Skype, click here if you are interested in learning more.

New on 500px : 50 Photographs Later… by ChadPowellPhotography by ChadPowellPhotography

Due to this image consisting of 50 individual photographs, all taken within the same hour, it took an incredibly long time to stitch together. All that being said, the end result is a 360 degree view of Castle Haven, showing off the entire Milky Way that arches above our heads starting in the south and finishing in the north. Very little adjustments to the milky way were needed, due to the incredibly clear night that evening. What you see here is the most natural colours of our galaxy, and the most accurate we’d see with our eyes if they were as sensitive to light as my camera. Also, the small smudge to the right of the left side of the milky way is in fact the Andromada Galaxy.
