New on 500px : whatever by DustinGent by DustinGent

I usually don’t do quotes – too cliche for my liking – but this actually is pretty powerful

“An interesting story that someone told me once is that in Belfast, by what street someone lives on you can tell not only their religion but tell how much money they’re making — literally by which side of the road they live on, because the further up the hill the more expensive the houses become. You can almost tell what the people are earning by the name of the street they live on and what side of that street they live on. That said something to me, and so I started writing about a place where the streets have no name….”

New on 500px : Something Fierce by DustinGent by DustinGent

Discovered some more files I hadn’t done anything with. Wildflowers will be in full swing in a few short weeks. Fractured shoulder be damned, I will find a way to get into the backcountry to shoot new areas 🙂

Upon opening the files from the 1Ds, I realized what a ^$&ing dust magnet it was. If there is an action in photoshop to remove 1.3K dust bunnies from files, I’m all ears. I actually bracketed for this comp, which helps because the files fall apart rather easily.

Anyways, expecting to get light like this again in fields of pristine flowers, as far as the eye can see and no mosquitoes. 🙂 I’m working on a new website that will have some new stuff on there, incase anyone cares 🙂

New on 500px : Let It Shine by TjThorne by TjThorne

This one will look better by viewing on black. Click the photo to make that happen.

I don’t have many chances to get out to nature currently. “Life gets in the way of living” kind of stuff. When my friend Tula invited me on a hike on one of the busiest trails in Oregon on the Fourth of July… I felt no hesitation about tagging along.

I think my favorite image from the day is this one right here. I was hanging out in a cave when I noticed the backlit ferns. Not thinking anything of it.. I just started shooting. I was lucky enough to catch the sun peeking through the space between the top of the cave and the opposing ridge line. Water dripping down the outside cliff face adds another pleasing element to the scene.

Yeah.. there was a line at the payment box in the parking lot. Yeah.. there was barely any parking. Yup… there was a highway of people walking up the trail and cooling off in the waters. Yes.. I shot Punchbowl Falls. But sometimes when you have those chances to get out and immerse yourself in natural beauty you just need to suck it up and let that opportunity shine.

Thanks for reading.

New on 500px : Miss Independent by ramij by ramij

Instead of catching fireworks on the 4th of July, I decided to take the 2 hour drive to shoot wildflowers on Mt. St. Helens. Thought I’d miss fireworks, but my trip on the way back was a “drive-through fireworks” display through the back roads of Washington. It seemed every home had their personal show going off in their backyard. Very cool experience on both fronts.

Technically, this one was an absolute bear to process. Something like 10 focus stacked shots and manually blending that took me longer than I’d like to admit. I wanted to get up close and personal with the wildflowers, which meant focus blending was critical for sharpness front to back. It’s not perfect but I couldn’t look at it any longer. I’ll definitely be back to this location again next year.

New on 500px : Partly Sunny by DustinGent by DustinGent

Taken a few weeks ago, same trip as my last MSH shot – just a bit earlier. I over sharpened this one on accident/purpose – the thumbnail on 500px looked bad.. oh well 🙂

New on 500px : Memories of Days Past by brianhiltz by brianhiltz

It seems it was only yesterday that I stood here, alone on the beach, after the storms passed. Like so many Washington mornings in March, the roads were wet as I drove through the rainy darkness, slowly sipping my coffee in eager anticipation of being near the water.

The inclement weather impeded my ability to shoot, so I missed my chance to capture a gorgeous sunrise. By the time the rain passed, the orange glow behind the distant islands had already disappeared, but in its place were dark clouds and a soft subtle light that filled the sky.

Today, as I look forward to my next trip to Washington, I can’t help but wonder… Will I be just as excited this time? Like the broken posts remaining from the pier that once stood there, I know there are parts of my life that are gone, and so many things have changed. Was this just a fleeting moment in time that only exists now through the memories I have in this image, or will I find that same feeling and fall in love with Washington all over again?

Thanks for looking.

New on 500px : Luck by DustinGent by DustinGent

On the way back from spending the weekend in the Olympics with my wife, I talked her into letting me try my luck at MSH. NOAA forecasted 22% cloud cover at sunrise – however when Mt. St. Helens was first visible from the road, there were no clouds.

An hour later, there were some clouds. Flowers are still blooming, so if you haven’t visited here yet, fear not as it will be prime within a few weeks.
