Sunrise light begins to illuminate a redwoods grove in the Boy Scout Trail, near Crescent City, CA. Out of all the groves and trails that we visited, Boy Scout trail was my favorite by far. It was like being in the Jurassic, amongst ferns that, in some instances were as tall as my shoulders. And then there’s those amazing redwood trees! A really humbling experience to be standing next to a living organism that is 10 times older than me, or even older.

Cloud Forest

This is recent work from a few weeks ago in Northern California. The redwood forest put me into a completely awestruck state of being. I was there with my fiancé in the fog for several hours, but it seemed like eternity, or no time at all. We walked the trail slowly, in a trance admiring how the trees climbed into the cloud and how the cloud hung on the mountain. The atmosphere breathed in and out in intangible, giant waves and there was stillness. We are small in comparison to the forces that define life..

* See it in black. Or not. I don’t care! Oh, and I was gonna go for some pedantic title like “Beams of Hope” or something silly like that, but opted against it.

From a recent trip down to northern California and then drive back to Seattle via highway 101 along the Oregon coast.

To this day one of my favorite Redwoods images is from my pal TJ Thorne, “Endor Redwoods” (http://ift.tt/1mwF27X) but I wanted to find my own comp at this location so I made the trip. I was hoping for some awesome conditions with dense fog and prime rhoddies.

Of course that wasn’t the case! Probably a high pressure system off the coast because it was nothing but clear, blue skies and not a single day with fog. Either am or pm. And so, these were the best conditions I found. And I actually like this quite a bit!

Taken while getting ready for a May workshop in the northern California Redwoods. It was a pretty basic exposure since the light was so soft and balanced in the fog. Localized luminosity, color and contrast adjustments were made with the help of the TKActions Panel and luminosity masks.

It was incredible to watch light rays blast through the trees with fog lingering in the distance. Some scenes are just so photogenic that heavy post-processing isn’t even necessary, all it took was a little bit of contrast and some sharpening to really bring this scene to life. It’s been a pleasure spending time in the Bay Area capturing its beauty, cant wait to show you guys more.

So here’s a cool shot from my trip to the redwoods. These woods are kinda spooky when you are the only one around and the fog is thick. It creates a really dark atmosphere in there, but when the fog starts to burn off or move it really becomes magical. I can’t believe I actually took the time to shoot a selfie. Normally, I am all business when the lights shows start to happen, but I have recently been making a conscience effort to have more fun and do some different stuff like this during the show. I should add that Paul Bowman helped me with some shutter pulls after a few attempts of me not getting it with in the timer. Thanks for looking and sharing! Looks better on black.
