The famous mountain Olstind in Reine, Lofoten (Norway) during sunrise on a blueish winters day.
There was almost no snow on the islands in this february, but they still look beautyful as always 🙂

New on 500px : Reine i Lofoten by FelixInden by FelixInden

The picturesque town Reine on Lofoten islands in Norway on a winters day just after sunrise.
The clouds were drifting over Olstind and the rest of the mountains leaving me with this dreamy view.

New on 500px : Midnight Sun at Reine, Lofoten, Norway by EuropeTrotter by EuropeTrotter

My first experience with the midnight sun !

The midnight sun is visible at Lofoten between the end of May and the middle of July.
During the Norwegian summer season, the sun never sets north of the Arctic Circle and for a couple of months the sun is visible 24 hours a day.
The phenomenon is caused by the tilt in the Earth´s axis – an imaginary line through the planet between the north and south poles around which it rotates. As the Earth orbits the Sun, the tilt makes the North Pole face towards the Sun in summer (keeping it in sunlight even as the Earth spins) and away from it in winter (keeping it dark). Hence the continuous sunlight during the summer.

New on 500px : Stockfish, Lofoten Islands, Norway by EuropeTrotter by EuropeTrotter

Stockfish ?
Stockfish is unsalted fish, especially cod, dried by cold air and wind on wooden racks on the foreshore, called “hjell”. The drying of food is the world’s oldest known preservation method, and dried fish has a storage life of several years. The fish is prepared immediately after capture. After gutting the fish, it is either dried whole, or split along the spine leaving the tail connected. The fish is hung on the hjell from February to May. Stable cool weather protects the fish from insects and prevents an uncontrolled bacterial growth. A temperature just above zero degrees Celsius, with little rain, is ideal. Too much frost will spoil the fish, as ice destroys the fibers in the fish. The climate in northern Norway is excellent for stockfish production. Due to the stable conditions, the stockfish produced in Lofoten is regarded as the best. The traditional cod harvest in Lofoten also takes place during the best drying time.

New on 500px : Green dream by yanl by yanl

One of the goals from this trip to Norway is to see northern lights in person. I was lucky got to see it three nights in a row.

Even the northern lights were not strong, I am still happy.

The northern lights like a green ghost dance across the sky, Words can’t describe it and pictures don’t do it justice. It was taken during full moon night without wind 🙂

New on 500px : A Promising Morning by LiorY by LiorY

It was too easy taking this shot…drove to Raine overlook early morning, drinking my coffee while seating in my car waiting for the sunrise.
Ok…I had to get out of the car to place my tripod…but that was about it…

New on 500px : A Rorbu, Reine, Lofoten, Norway by EuropeTrotter by EuropeTrotter

It was my rorbu during 3 days !!! A little corner of paradise, isn’t it ?

The distinctive Rorbu cabins are one of the features of the Nordland coastline and particular to Lofoten. The cabins were originally basic accommodation for the Lofoten fishermen, built on poles partly out in the water.
The first Rorbu cabins in Lofoten were commissioned by King Øystein in 1120 as housing for the fishermen during the Lofoten fishing season. The cabins were simple structures, built on poles partly out in the sea and usually comprising two rooms: a storage room and a living room with beds. The storage room was used to store food and fishing equipment, and for preparations for a new day on the waters around Lofoten.
Many fishing villages gradually became densely built-up, with the red cabins – and fish processing buildings – dominating the townscape. Red fish-oil paint was the cheapest and most commonly used paint, but a different colour – ochre – gradually gained in popularity. The Rorbu cabins and the large number of racks for drying the fish create a special environment in the fishing villages of Lofoten.
