Milky Way over Lower Yellowstone Falls, Yellowstone National Park. After setting up for this shot, I waited another hour for the Milky Way to rotate closer to the falls and get a better alignment. During the time exposure, I light painted the falls and the canyon with a large studio strobe. Planning, calculations, and building lighting equipment for this shot took almost two months.

The Navajo people believe this sacred mountain is the center of the universe. In March, I photographed the Milky Way over Agathla Peak or “El Capitan” – south of Monument Valley, Arizona. The peak is an eroded volcanic plug that rises over 1500 feet (457 meters) above the surrounding area. It is 7 miles (11 km) north of Kayenta (providing the glow to the right). – Spaces in my 2014 NightScape Workshops schedule are still available.

Milky Way over granite pinnacles at Alabama Hills – Tuttle Creek Canyon area. There are 6 battery powered lights hidden among the rocks that were used to light this scene. These pinnacles are about 40 feet (14 m.) high.

Most of my NightScapes are ONE exposure (less than 30 seconds), with just enough light painting added during the exposure to enhance landscape recognition.
