Best On Black!

Here is a new photo from the La Jolla Coves, one of my all time favorite seascape locations. I was about knee deep in water when this was taken and a few waves came in and almost took my camera out. By the end of the shot I was waist deep in water, my camera is fine and the experience was amazing.

Thanks guys for taking a look at the photo

This one will look better by viewing on black. Click the photo to make that happen.

I don’t have many chances to get out to nature currently. “Life gets in the way of living” kind of stuff. When my friend Tula invited me on a hike on one of the busiest trails in Oregon on the Fourth of July… I felt no hesitation about tagging along.

I think my favorite image from the day is this one right here. I was hanging out in a cave when I noticed the backlit ferns. Not thinking anything of it.. I just started shooting. I was lucky enough to catch the sun peeking through the space between the top of the cave and the opposing ridge line. Water dripping down the outside cliff face adds another pleasing element to the scene.

Yeah.. there was a line at the payment box in the parking lot. Yeah.. there was barely any parking. Yup… there was a highway of people walking up the trail and cooling off in the waters. Yes.. I shot Punchbowl Falls. But sometimes when you have those chances to get out and immerse yourself in natural beauty you just need to suck it up and let that opportunity shine.

Thanks for reading.

New on 500px : Shining Through by Kyraly by Kyraly

Went back for a second night to Kirkjufell (see the black and white shot from yesterday with less than ideal light 🙂 ). Got lucky to get this shot. Strong rain all day (and has been raining and overcast fairly consistently for four days) but on the way to the site there was a hole in the clouds out to sea. Got there and for the second day was there alone. The light was fantastic for about 20 minutes. Five minutes after the light disappeared behind the clouds 10 people showed up.

Always best on black

Here is a new shot from the La Jolla Coves, one of my absolute favorite places to catch sunset and shoot seascapes. This was a tough lighting situation with the sun being so bright. I wanted this shot to have a very dark and mysterious mood. I hope you all enjoy the photograph!

New on 500px : Dragon Tree by GrantMeyer by GrantMeyer

Every sunrise seems special to me, maybe it is the hope of a new day or just the effort it takes to get up and witness it but I always seem to put just a little more effort into capturing them.

New on 500px : Beautiful Light by Sean_Bagshaw by Sean_Bagshaw

Another of the lupine photos I took in May in the coast range of Northern California. Everything lined up for me to compose this image and then wait for the sun to move into the opening between the oak tree branches and create the sun star. Facing into the sun also provided the wonderful back lighting on the flowers and the deep shadow of the tree trunk coming into the foreground. The thin overcast sky filtered the light. A few different frames were blended for dynamic range and also motion blur in the flowers due to a slight breeze. An aperture of f/22 and the particular lens (Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II) make the sunstar possible. Tony Kuyper’s Luminosity Masks and other actions were essential for developing this image, as they are for most of my images.
