New on 500px : Supermoon Rebirth by cwexplorationphotography by cwexplorationphotography

The third time was definitely the charm up on Johnston Ridge as I finally caught one of the most gorgeous and longest sunsets I had ever seen and a supermoon rise as an added bonus. This was taken just after 10pm as the moon rose up over the mountain. The sunset was still lingering and light pink glow illuminated the western side of the mountain while the bright moonlight enveloped the eastern side of the blast zone. It was absolutely gorgeous and made for one heck of a memorable night. As an added bonus I ran into two local photogs Kristina Wilson and Paul Bowman; small world!!

New on 500px : Super Moon Rising by DonSmith1 by DonSmith1

Yesterday evening I captured the first of 3 Super Full Moon rises near my central California home. This moon is 14% larger and 30% brighter than an average moon due to its proximity to earth with its elliptical orbit (about 30,000 miles closer). There will be another one next month and again in September.

But that is not what makes this moon look so large. It is a visual trick where your mind is comparing the relative size of the moon to a known object (in this case, an oak tree). BTW – the moon is no larger on the horizon than it is when we see it high in the sky – again, it’s just an illusion. For more on this, Google: Ponzo Illusion.

New on 500px : Moon Rise by Myselves by Myselves

Super moon rose over Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park, Canadian Rockies. Taken in June 2013.

I was wondering around the lake at 10pm, looking for a nice view point and wondering what to do if I encountered a bear. Then I saw the moon rising, and I find the view so mesmerising and I stayed on to take a few more shoots. It was only till the next day when I read the newspaper and I found out that it was actually the super moon of 2013.

Thanks for viewing!
