New on 500px : Supermoon Rebirth by cwexplorationphotography by cwexplorationphotography

++view on black++

The third time was definitely the charm up on Johnston Ridge as I finally caught one of the most gorgeous and longest sunsets I had ever seen and a supermoon rise as an added bonus. This was taken just after 10pm as the moon rose up over the mountain. The sunset was still lingering and light pink glow illuminated the western side of the mountain while the bright moonlight enveloped the eastern side of the blast zone. It was absolutely gorgeous and made for one heck of a memorable night. As an added bonus I ran into two local photogs Kristina Wilson and Paul Bowman; small world!!

One of my favorite places to be in the summer wildflower season is Mount Saint Helens in Washington. When we first arrived to this location, the clouds were amazing right over the mountain. But they changed, and I found this comp where the clouds had migrated.

This is a focus tack of 5 images and an exposure blend. If you want to learn processing techniques, make sure to visit my website for tips or for a skype lesson.

New on 500px : Sierra Sky by nevadax1 by nevadax1

The Sierra Nevada Mountains run for about 400 miles in western California with part in Nevada. In summer, the wildflowers are blooming in July at the higher elevations. I was lucky to witness this beautiful sunset a few days ago. I hope you like it too! Thanks for looking.

It’s hard to pick a favorite image, but I think that this is up there for me. This is the image that I’ve been longing for since I started photography about two years ago. Mt. Rainier and wildflowers go hand in hand and to be able to finally photograph them, together is something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. This was taken in early morning light on Sun Top lookout at 7,500 ft near HWY 410. Thanks a ton to my girlfriend’s dad for finding this really cool location. This image wouldn’t have been possible without his insight. This is what I hope to be the first of several wildflower images from the mountains this summer!

New on 500px : Nature’s Subtleties by cwexplorationphotography by cwexplorationphotography

This past weekend my gf’s dad was kind enough to show me some areas I hadn’t seen near Mt. Rainier. This image comes from an unmarked forest road near Sun Top lookout on HWY 410 by Mt. Rainier. I bushwhacked through a stand of old Alder trees and stumbled across a single patch of these bright pink and blue flowers. I had never seen anything like this in the high country before and it was the only patch of flowers like this in the area. I went off to scout the area for some more meadows and such but I couldn’t get this image out of my head, so I decided to come back and photograph this area.

This is 8 images focus stacked and 2 for dynamic range. These flowers were extremely tiny and I was essentially down on the ground trying to photograph them, lots of fun!

New on 500px : Miss Independent by ramij by ramij

Instead of catching fireworks on the 4th of July, I decided to take the 2 hour drive to shoot wildflowers on Mt. St. Helens. Thought I’d miss fireworks, but my trip on the way back was a “drive-through fireworks” display through the back roads of Washington. It seemed every home had their personal show going off in their backyard. Very cool experience on both fronts.

Technically, this one was an absolute bear to process. Something like 10 focus stacked shots and manually blending that took me longer than I’d like to admit. I wanted to get up close and personal with the wildflowers, which meant focus blending was critical for sharpness front to back. It’s not perfect but I couldn’t look at it any longer. I’ll definitely be back to this location again next year.

New on 500px : Partly Sunny by DustinGent by DustinGent

Taken a few weeks ago, same trip as my last MSH shot – just a bit earlier. I over sharpened this one on accident/purpose – the thumbnail on 500px looked bad.. oh well 🙂

New on 500px : New Beginnings by MasonCummings by MasonCummings

This one looks much better on black, if you feel so inclined…

Well, after more than two weeks of packing and unpacking, schlepping a moving truck 1,500 miles in a two-vehicle caravan with a strung-out cat, and one broken toe; it’s so great to finally be back in Colorado!

Despite my cracked phalange, I was able to get out to shoot once last week, just off Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Unfortunately I had to throw in the towel on some backpacking plans, but it was still great to get out just once even if it was basically roadside shooting. This particular evening was pretty hazy due to smoke blowing down from wildfires all the way in Canada; visibility in the other direction was probably less than a mile. Still, the smoke made for a pretty nice vivid sunset.

It’s been a while since I’ve shot or processed anything at all, and man do I feel rusty! It’s funny how fast you can loose it when you’re not out shooting regularly. The rock on the right is kind of a nagging reminder of that for me in this comp, but I still felt like I wanted to run with it. I feel even rustier on the processing end, but still really enjoyed struggling through this one and getting my feet wet again. One thing’s for sure, I really can’t wait to start getting back out there and getting the creative gears turning again…

Tomorrow I start my new job with The Wilderness Society and I couldn’t be more excited (and a little nervous). With that, here’s to new beginnings!

New on 500px : Tetons and Wildflowers by BarbaraHayton by BarbaraHayton

The wildflowers in Grand Teton National Park have been incredible and so have the cloud and fog that add so much depth and drama to the scene.
