New on 500px : Goodish Morning by RyanDyar by RyanDyar

The white background kills the shadows on this. View it on black… please.

I went pretty dark and moody with this one… which captured my mood ad the time I was photographing this scene. We had some decent light and conditions, but I had to overcome some pretty serious obstacles to get this shot, and it’s overcoming obstacles that gives you the sense of accomplishment that makes certain images stand out to you.

First major obstacle? Making the 5min hike out to this spot. It was brutal, so tough. Even more so because I forgot my boots and had to make the long journey while wearing torn up Converse All-Stars. I immediately understood what it’s like to climb Everest. The 55f/12c degree temperatures had me in fear of frost bite and loosing a couple toes.

Second obstacle? Food. I didn’t get to eat dinner and had to survive on snacks alone. Earlier in the day Miles Morgan and I stopped at Subway (a tradition for us) and picked up foot long sandwiches. I ate half of mine and saved the rest for dinner. Well, I stored the sandwich on the side pouch of my camera bag. We arrived at this spot at Crater Lake and I set down my bag to wait for sunset. After about 30 min, I returned to my bag with an empty tummy, looking forward to indulging in the yummies I had saved. COVERED. IN. ANTS. I hate ants… almost as much as mosquitos. Both are pointless animals. So long story short, I had to survive on sunflower seeds and potato chips. I was in fear for my life.

BUT, I overcame the struggles to get this average shot!

All jokes aside, I’m happy to announce that I will be co-leading a tour in March with my friend Arild Heitmann! 10 epic days of chasing light across Norway. Mountains, beaches, beaches with mountains, Aurora, long arctic sunrises and sunsets. In scenes like that, there are no obstacles to overcome!

Info about the tour can be found on Ryan Dyar Photography as well as my first release in a series of instructional videos I am creating (which covers techniques used in the making of this shot), info about processing instruction via Skype, in-field workshops and tours, and blah blah blah.
