Utah, southern, Dramatic panoramic of Zion Canyon in Zion National Park. Capturing the grandeur of a large landscape scene can be one of the most difficult challenges. Far to often the magnificence is lost when rendered on a small two dimensional plane. A lifetime is spent in search of ideal conditions along with beautiful light that might, among other things, create the illusion of a three dimensional space. This clearing storm in Zion National Park of southern Utah was just such an opportunity. I refer to it sometimes as the attempt to do a landscape justice. When the conditions are right, everything has to be done correctly in what can be a very short period of time. Over the decades I’ve missed far more opportunities than I’ve been successful at. It’s the nature of the game and the learning process.

Wet Stone – Zion Narrows, Please view on a black blackground

This very high and large wall of stone was wet from water slowly running down from above, When light from high above would hit the wet stone it cause this mountain of stone to glow.

The river was very calm in this area, the darker blue the water meant deeper water. There were times where it did come up above my waist and higher. Usually stayed in the very shallow water and only went to the deep water when there was no other way to go.

I’ve been looking at my schedule and there hardly seams to be any time to return to Utah for a photo trip this year so I went back and had a look at some of my shots from 2012 when my sweetheart and I spend 6 hours hiking up the Virgin River with about 200 foreign tourists. Getting an image without people was challenging and frustrating at the time but I now enjoy how they add scale to the scene.

The iconic Watchmen peak at the southern entrance of Zion National Park. I spent almost two weeks around Zion with nothing but clear, blue skies. While that made it great to hike in, it made very boring photos. Then finally, on the last day there it rained heavily all day long. I thought it wouldn’t stop and the clouds would just be stuck and never leave the canyon, then just before sunset they passed through to the south and created some beautiful lighting just in time for me to get this photo.
